A few background notes:
  • A story about standardbred horses, "End of the Race for Family Farm", was chosen Best Sports Feature of 2006 by the Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association.
  • A profile of a philosophy professor recuperating from a severe stroke, "The Book of Stephen", was named Best Feature of 2003 by MDDC Press Association.
  • An essay about the fifth anniversary of 9/11, "A Time for Remembrance", won first prize in commentary writing at the 2006 Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild Awards.
  • The travel story "Trading Places" won a 2007 Lowell Thomas Silver Award from the American Society of Travel Writers. The travel story "Taking on the Kenai" is included in the anthology Travelers' Tales Alaska.
  • "An Education in Aging", "Journey to Jerusalem", and "End of the Race for Family Farm" are part of the Nieman Foundation's collection of narrative nonfiction writing at Harvard University.
