Bio
Tom Dunkel's work has appeared in The Washington Post, Sports Illustrated, Smithsonian, Travel & Leisure, New York Times Sunday Magazine, Slate, Wall Street Journal, Nature Conservancy, and Audubon, among other publications. He also has done commentaries for National Public Radio.
From 2003 to 2007 he was a staff feature writer at The Baltimore Sun; prior to that, a contributing editor at National Geographic Traveler and George, John Kennedy's now-defunct political magazine. He began his journalism career as a senior writer at New Jersey Monthly.
He has won writing awards from the Maryland-Delaware-District of Columbia Press Association, Washington-Baltimore Newspaper Guild, Society of American Travel Writers, and Canadian Tourism Board. Several of his articles are part of the Nieman Foundation's permanent collection of narrative journalism at Harvard University.
Dunkel grew up in New Jersey and graduated from Muhlenberg College. He later earned a masters degree in journalism at New York University, then spent 12 years based in Washington, DC. He currently lives in Baltimore.
